Session 7: November 7, 2023: Researching Like Call of Cthulhu Characters (24th Day of Springrise, 1165 AS)

Session 7: November 7, 2023 (24th Day of Springrise, 1165 AS)

Dramatis Personae:

  • Echo, Wolfkin Hunter, played by Mike "Just Because I'm a Wolf Doesn't Mean I Need a Bowl" P.
  • Kelter Tealeaf, Halfling Rogue, played by Mike "Echo Needs to Go for Walkies" Y.
  • Vinny Boombatz, Dwarven Fighter, played by Eric "Vinny Needs to Go for Drinkies" M.

Quod Occurrit:

The session started off with our heroes still in Pelagia, and they gather a bit more intel on Princess Arvia. It turns out that Kelter's paramour stands outside of the kinship of her clan. The rumour mill says this is because her mother had intimate relations with a stone statue (as one does) in order to offer her offspring to the dwarven god Huge. Dwarves fear and are terrified by her, but nevertheless respect her as chosen of the god. Kelter has definitely punched above his weight with her. Hopefully she’ll let him live, as she’s essentially the dwarven Aragorn, albeit without the propensity for kindness. Perhaps he will have to gnaw his own arm off in order to survive.

They managed to recall some lore about Stanengist while going about their errands. When the first elves of the Forbidden Lands completed their work of making things green and beautiful, they divested themselves of the flesh and gathered their heart rubies and set them in the crown. By the way, what’s a “heart ruby”? The thief Merigall (oh crap) allegedly then stole the rubies and made off with them for reasons that are unclear. How old would they have to be if they stole the gems back in the day? The bard certainly didn’t seem a day over 30, but didn’t look like an elf. And what’s with the yellow eyes? Who else had yellow eyes that they’ve met? Right, another bard named Dalb, back at Weatherstone. Are they related, or are yellow eyes a thing that just happens (to bards?) in the Forbidden Lands? If only the heroes weren’t a bunch of hicks from the sticks, they might know. Regardless, the legend goes on to say that whoever then reunites the rubies and crown will then rule over the Forbidden Lands. Seems like a sweet gig, to be honest. Better than tramping around the Forbidden Lands trying not to get killed by random encounters.

With the artist formerly/currently known as Merigall suddenly nowhere to be found, the heroes enlist the help of Hunting Lynx, who assisted them in finding more information at the temple archives. One of the rubies is alleged to have been placed into the sword Maligarn, and was then lost to time in the Veil of the Dead. Sounds like a cheery place, and probably perfectly safe to go explore. They learn about the Nehkaka Sceptre, which sounds like it should be in Weatherstone, where they’ve already been.

The heroes then decide that Weatherstone is indeed the place to be, since they’ve already cleared part of it, and it might contain that fancy sceptre. You know, where awakened and vanquished an undead lord. And bargained with harpies. And killed a creature that was like if the Alien and a manticore had a love child with Ripley as the obstetrician.

The party then finished procuring supplies and collected some custom orders before heading out into the great not-unknown, since they'll be retreating their steps to Weatherstone, and giving up the XP for entering new hexes in the process. Such is the price of greatness.

They head off in that morning, and encounter nothing of import.  To be fair, the day's journey was kind of a pain in the ass. Lots of rain, not much food, and Kelter was very lonely without Arvia by his side. Vinny was not having any Hammer Time. There were no encounters, and they decided to set up camp. While on watch, Vinny had an interesting experience: he heard the fox talking in its sleep, but couldn’t make out what it was saying. What kind of fox talks in its sleep? Or talks at all, period? At least it doesn’t have yellow eyes. Probably. Not that anyone checked.

In the morning it was still raining. Where are we, Hârn?* With this cheery weather following them, the party thinks better of their plan and figures giving up Scarnesbane to Princess Arvia in return for assistance in taking Weatherstone is a good idea. Thus they sacrifice more XP by staying in already explored hexes and retrace their steps to The Hollows, hoping to run into Arvia there as she heads back home. They avoid a party of a half dozen or so orcs with a prisoner trussed up to a pole, and make camp, ending the session.
