Session 10: January 16, 2024 (30th Day of Springrise, 1165 AS) The Chicken Cannon

Session 10: January 16, 2024 (30th Day of Springrise, 1165 AS)

Dramatis Personae:

  • Echo, Wolfkin Hunter, played by Mike "Harpy Bane" P.
  • Kelter Tealeaf, Halfling Rogue, played by Mike "Why Do I Have to Be Mr. Pink?" Y.
  • Vinny Boombatz, Dwarven Fighter, played by Eric "I Think I'm Getting the Hang of This" M.

Quod Occurrit:

The heroes then had lunch, since fighting undead is hungry work. Their supplies were still holding out. They proceed by retracing the steps they took the last time. They investigate the chasm again, hoping for some sign of the Duke's war chest that they might have missed last time. They find exactly the same things they found last time, which were:
  1. zero
  2. zip
  3. zilch
  4. nada
  5. nothing
  6. nil
  7. bupkis
  8. diddly-squat
  9. bugger-all
In that exact order.

It was a bit of a pain in the ass getting down there and back again, resulting in pushed rolls for missile (attaching a rope via arrow), scouting, move, etc. Most of those rolls resulted in damage to our heroes or their equipment. They proceeded to the room where they fought the manticore/alien beast, and found it still empty. They hunkered down there to rest and repair their gear, as it was easily defensible. Fortunately, Vinny is an outstanding craftsman, and was able to effect repairs quickly and easily.

The next day they approached the Harpies, with everyone failing badly at attempting a stealthy approach.  Unsurprisingly, the bird beasts were in no mood to negotiate with interlopers, and a fierce battle ensued, which basically ended up with the Harpies being Cuisinarted by the combined martial might of the party. It wasn't even close. To be fair, I made mistakes running the combat, but it wouldn't have effected the outcome, which was essentially an explosion of bloodied feathers. Think the Royal Canadian Air Farce's "Chicken Cannon".

Hoping that the chicken ladies had secreted the war chest's contents in their nest, the heroes rushed to see what was at the top of the tower. What they found was a functioning catapult loaded with pyrite and a few coins. Still no war chest.

They moved on to the chamber where they defeated Algarod. Hanging above the bed was a painting labeled "Queen Therania" When they approached, the image in the painting let out an incredible loud and creepy scream (cue: jump scare) which gave the heroes no shortage of damage, which they were able to weather, barely. This painting was supposed to be triggered the first time they were in the tower, but I forgot. Bad GM, bad. I could have just deleted it, but I thought it was cool and giving random damage to PCs is fun after they've crushed all opposition like bugs. Their Lore check revealed that she was the daughter of the vile demon King Zygofer. Who is that guy anyway? He seems important. It's been said that Therania killed King Algarod and took him as her undead lover. Gross. They burn the painting.

They also noticed that Algarod's (un)dead body is missing. That can't be good.

Echo is getting really frustrated about this whole war chest thing. He does a full 360 around the outside and then notices a convenient little crack in the side of the tower, just below the terrace. If he were thinking about hiding something, that would be a good place to hide it. With a bit of manoeuvring, Kelter is able to rappel down and access the recess. Inside is a leather sack full of coins! While not the entire contents of a war chest, it's a sizeable amount, over 6 gold in various coins. A gold coin is a lot of money in the Forbidden Lands! With that, we end the session.
